Journal May 23, 2004

It’s been a wet weekend again – there were 3.1 inches of rain in the rain gauge when we got here, and there are another .7 inches in it now. And it’s still raining.

On the way down we stopped to see John Turula at his gallery between Bay City and Maiden Rock. He’s doing great, colorful, sculptural stuff, which is displayed outside all around a tiny, old farmhouse. Inside he has pieces by other artists, and his studio. It was fun to see him – he and Becky have planted a little prairie near their house, so we’re going to get together sometime to exchange ideas, and so they can see our place.

I’ve checked the most obvious places for garlic-mustard on our land, and didn’t find any. But it’s down the road along the creek, so I’m sure it will be here soon. In the process I walked along the road, and discovered some nice plants on the south side – I’ll have to keep watching our land to see if they’re over here. I saw Bishop’s Cap (Mitella diphylla), and a nice native honeysuckle – Red Honeysuckle, or Mountain Honeysuckle (Lonicera dioica). On our side, under some Alders, to the west of the driveway, there are wonderful protected places with Swamp Saxifrage, and Jewelweed, and a tiny little white mustard called Spring Cress (Cardamine bulbosa).

Tonight there were 5 Indigo Buntings around the millet feeder on the deck, and at least 6 Hummingbirds buzzing around the sugar water feeder in front of the porch.
