Journal for June 28, 2005

We see fawns everywhere right now. Here’s one that came out to the driveway while I was looking at butterflies.
It didn’t seem to know what to do – it just stood and stared at me while I took pictures.

The driveway is alive with butterflies these days. They all flutter up when we walk or drive by. We need “Butterfly Crossing” signs to slow visitors down – they’re pretty good at getting out of the way of walkers, but not so good at cars. Here’s one little driveway scene with some Silvery Checkerspots and Great Spangled Fritillaries.

And the Hackberry Butterflies are out for the first time this year.

There are so many butterflies that whenever I open the tractor door to the garage a few of them fly inside. I always go back into the garage to try to get them out. If I approach them slowly they are quite willing to sit on my hand while I move them outside. Here are a couple of them:

I worked hard on weeding the Narrows and Cat’s Paw prairies. Both of them look pretty good, but they both have white and yellow sweet clover. Mike mowed the part of the Narrows Prairie that had the thickest patches of Sweet Clover, but I decided to try to pull as much of the rest of it as I could. I also discovered a big patch of Common St. John’s Wort in the Narrows Prairie. I pulled most of it - all the plants that were flowering. Next week I’ll get the rest.

Mike mowed Buffalo Ridge Prairie – it’s such a beautiful spot – up on top of the ridge. Here it’s about half mowed.
