Cecropia moths – July 22, 2004

I’ve started a new project – raising Cecropia moths.
Margot, a friend who is an entomologist, gave me about 10 small Cecropia caterpillars on two branches of lilac. Right now I have them in an aquarium, but I’ll build a cage for them so they have more room, and so I can move them around more easily. The caterpillars are in several different instars – the smallest ones are only about 1/4 inch long. The larger ones are not quite an inch long. Their colors change dramatically from one instar to the next.

Here’s one of the smallest ones

Here’s the largest one

It will be fun to watch them grow.
