2/1/2010 Snow on the point
I girdled most of the mature aspen and birch trees around the edges of the prairie – some this spring, and some in 2009. The trees are starting to die, so the edges are looking more open, but some of the dead trees are falling into the prairie.
The aspen and dogwood sprouts grew more thickly this summer. We’ll mow them next spring, to try to set them back.

9/5/10 Big Bluestem grew very tall this year – this area is usually much shorter and dominated by Side-oats Grama, rather than Big Bluestem.
