Western Prairie 2014

[To see photos and stories of this prairie in other years, go to the links on the main Western Prairie page.]

The prairie looked gorgeous this year.  I can’t see the line between the earliest two plantings, but the line between the last two is still visible.  The middle section had lots of flowers and is getting much grassier.  The last section is also getting much grassier – it has more Big Bluestem than any of the other plantings.

7/25/2014  This is Pale Indian Plantain – from a seed that I presume came along with some of the seeds I purchased for this prairie.  It’s normally found in south-eastern Wisconsin, but it seems to like my prairie habitat.

8/2/2014   This is an area I don’t usually take photos of.  It’s along the woods on the northeast side of the prairie, on the way to Volvo Meadow.  Purple Giant Hyssop does very well in the shade here.

8/2/2014  Mike mowed the burdock at the south edge of the prairie, under the oak trees.  I planted prairie/savanna seeds there this winter, once there was snow on the ground.
