Polyphemus caterpillars – June 9, 2006

The Polyphemus caterpillars have hatched – 10 days after they were laid.

They’re extremely small – less than 1/4 inch long.

Now they’re heading away from the eggs to find some food.

I’m feeding mine on Box Elder leaves – they seem to be willing to eat them. Margot had more trouble getting hers to eat, but now they’ve settled on Oak leaves. When they get ready to eat, they array themselves around the edges of the underside of the leaves, with their heads at the edge and their bodies pointing toward the center of the leaf. After a bit they move around more and don’t look so symetrical.
