Walking down the driveway a few days ago, I counted more than 30 Infant moths. They were mostly sitting on the gravel, and they were quite friendly. I sat down and watched them, and was able to entice one onto my finger. Continue reading

Big Bend National Park – Windows Trail
This was the hike we took on our last day in the park. The rangers warn that it’s a long, hot walk, and the one that they need to rescue people from most often – when people hike it on a hot, sunny afternoon, and don’t bring along enough water. So we decided to start early in the morning, to be safe.
Driving Around Big Bend
We spent one day driving from one end of Big Bend to the other, and taking a few short hikes. It’s such a huge park – to drive from our campground at the east end, to Santa Elena Canyon at the west end is about 65 miles. Continue reading
Golden Eagle Release – March 25, 2009
Scott Mehus from the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, and Mark Martell from the Raptor Center released a Golden Eagle today about 4 miles from the farm, in Buffalo County. The eagle had been caught in a coyote trap, and brought to the raptor center to be rehabilitated. Scott and Mark took advantage of it’s being available, and fitted it with a radio transmitter so they can keep track of it after it’s released. Continue reading

It was 65 degrees today – a good day to bring out those early ‘leps’. (‘Leps’ is short for Lepidoptera – moths and butterflies.)
Big Bend National Park – Lost Mine Trail
The Lost Mine Trail is a strenuous 5 mile walk that starts at 5600 ft. and goes up to 6850 ft. The views are spectacular at nearly every step, and at the top there’s a view across the mountains and down over a divide into two beautiful canyons.
