Pseudohermonassa bicarnea – Pink-spotted Dart

Family Noctuidae   Hodges # 10950

Caterpillar foods: many foods including birch, clover, maple (Bugguide)  From the U of Alberta Entomology collection: “The larval hosts are in part uncertain; Crumb (1956) listed a variety of plants in several families, including blueberry, Gray birch, dandelion and Spiraea. However, McCabe (1991) found the larvae would only feed on two species of grass (Glyceria maxima (Hartm.) Holmb. and G. canadaensis (Michx.) and rejected blueberry, Grey birch, raspberry, yarrow, nettle, dogbane and elder.”

Similar to Pseudohermonassa tenicula but Pseudohermonassa bicarnea has more prominent pale patches along costa near base and at PM line, more obvious pale dots in subterminal line, and orbicular spot is open at both ends.  (Bugguide)
