Malacosoma disstria – Forest Tent Caterpillar

Hodges # 7698

Caterpillar foods: alder, basswood, birch, sherry, oak, poplar, willow  (Bugguide)

These caterpillars and moths look similar to Eastern Tent Caterpillars, but Forest Tent Caterpillars don’t actually make ‘tents’ – they congregate on silk mats which they make on the branches and trunks of trees. I don’t see them as often here, but that may be because they’re not as noticeable.
