Alypia octomaculata – Eight-spotted Forester

Family Noctuidae    Hodges # 9314

Caterpillar food: leaves of grape and Virginia Creeper

Alypia octomaculata has 8 spots – 2 on each forewing, and 2 on each hindwing.  Its antennae are all black.

(Very similar in appearance to Alypia langtoniA. langtoni females have only 6 spots – two on each forewing and one on each hind wing (males have 8), and both sexes have white rings on their antennal segments.)

The adults fly during the day.  They’re fairly common here – and easy to spot because of their bright coloring.
