Harmonia axyridis – Asian Lady Beetle

Family Coccinellidae

Native to eastern Asia.  Introduced into the US – for biological control of aphids – multiple times until they finally became established in 1988.  Spread rapidly throughout the US.  (Bugguide)

Very variable in color and pattern.

This is the commonest lady beetle we have here.  We see most of them near the house and garage, and especially in the fall when they’re looking for places to hibernate for the winter.  They hide in cracks in the house and emerge in early spring, often inside.
