Trichocera – Winter Crane Flies

“Swarms of Trichocera males are often seen dancing in the late afternoon sunlight, sometimes thousands of individuals in hundreds of swarms over many acres of lawns and open woodlands.”  – Harry D. Pratt

They also dance over compost piles, where their larvae live, on mild days throughout the winter.  (Stephen A. Marshall)
