Monochamus scutellatus – Whitespotted Sawyer

Distinguishing feature: scutellum is bright white.  Life cycle can take 2 years.  Larvae mine under bark in conifers, often after they’re already damaged.  Balsam Fir, spruce, White Pine are common hosts.   (Bugguide)  Adult beetles may feed on bark on the underside of twigs, which causes the tips to die and turn brown.  (ForestPests.org)
