Papaipema arctivorens – Northern Burdock Borer

Family Noctuidae     Hodges # 9471

Caterpillar foods:  bore in stems and rhizomes of burdock, thistle, teasel, vervain and mullein  (Handfield) ; wood betony (see below)

This is the earliest Borer to emerge.  Most of the others don’t appear until at least the end of August.  (Paul Dennehy)

5/24/2020  found Wood Betony with stem/flower damage

 

5/24/2020  Caterpillar was inside the stem

 

5/24/2020  I offered a potato with a hole drilled in it.  It disappeared inside.

 

8/24/2020  An adult emerged and was released
