Hodges # 6654

Caterpillar foods:  leaves of alder, apple, ash, basswood, birch, cherry, dogwood, elm, fir, hazel, hickory, maple, oak, pine, poplar, rose, serviceberry, willow  (Bugguide)

These specimens show a great amount of wing variation, and they may represent only one very variable species, or several.  Some may be Hypagyrtis ester – a very similar species with no clear pattern differences.   Bob Belmont has an explanation with examples on MPG.
