Caterpillar foods:  leaves of hickory and walnut  (Bugguide)

This species has a southern and a northern form, which look quite different.  The northern form has gray forewings and reddish-brown shading in the basal streak and the spots at the anal angle.  The southern form has no brown, and may have a blackish streak running the length of the wing.  (Bugguide)
