Family Erebidae Hodges # 8098
Caterpillar foods: tree lichens in the genera Hypogimnium, Lobaria, Protococcus (Bugguide) A note by Lee Penner on Bugguide says that they actually eat “a green alga called Protococcus virdis which grows on smooth bark tree trunks like Oak and Birch” and also on some lichens.
This has been split into 3 species: C. albata, C. umbrata, and C. ochreata. (Revision) C. albata and C. umbrata are the most likely in this area, but since they can’t be told apart from photographs, I’m going to leave them here for now.
