Caterpillar foods: oaks

Eggs laid in crevices and wounds in the bark;  younger caterpillars feed on buds during the day; older caterpillars hide in ant nests at the base of the tree during the day, and feed on leaves at night.  Ants feed on honeydew produced by the caterpillars.  (BAMONA)

I see this species every summer, but not often, so it’s always a treat to find one.
