Sumac Prairie – 2025

[To see photos and stories of this prairie in other years, go to the links on the main Sumac Prairie page.]

Again this year, the only work I did on the prairie was the few days in early September when I climbed up to look for Northern Flower Moths.  I spent the mornings of September 7. 11, and 16 there, but I didn’t find any of the moths.

I did find a few other interesting creatures, and cut and treated sumac, gray dogwood, aspen sprouts, and honeysuckle.

The middle and lower parts of the prairie are mostly very open, with little sumac or other brush.  There are still circles of brush – mostly gray dogwood and sumac – on the upper part of the prairie.  I haven’t walked up as far as the top savanna for a long time.  The lower savanna is still fairly open, since Erik from Kule Region Forestry mowed it in 2022 but we need to work on cutting resprouting shrubs.
