Narrows Prairie – 2021

[To see photos and stories of this prairie in other years, go to the links on the main Narrows Prairie page.]

The only work we did here this year was to mow for aspen sprouts.  The sprouts seem to be taller and healthier in some years, and this was one of those years.

5/22/2021  This prairie is lovely when the aspen sprouts are still small.

7/29/2021  This prairie has several clumps of Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya) that have been growing each year.  I didn’t plant them intentionally – the seeds must have come along with other seeds I ordered.

8/26/2021  Showy Goldenrod

8/28/2021  The aspen sprouts are starting to get tall.  Mowing will start as soon as the monarch migration has gone through.

9/27/2021  Mike patchy mowing technique – we like being able to leave the aspen free patches unmowed as refuges for birds and insects and small animals.

12/2/2021  Crows flying north toward their nighttime roost.  We watch them do this every day, all winter long.
