Aphids – sometimes called Plant Lice – suck juices from plants.  They often excrete a sweet liquid (honeydew) that attracts ants.  The ants eat the honeydew, and help to defend the aphid colonies from predators.   Bugguide has more information – on host plants, life cycles and interactions with other creatures.
