Orange Hawkweed – Hieracium aurantiacum

Family Asteraceae

We have small areas with scattered Orange Hawkweed plants, but it’s not a big problem here.  I’ve seen it in 3 of our prairies – one planted prairie, and two remnants.  The plants are mostly in the mowed paths, but extend out from the paths into the prairies.

I spot spray the plants with Milestone after the flowers bloom – so I can find them – usually early to mid-June.  While I’m working I break off the flowers and dispose of them so they don’t spread any seeds.

This treatment isn’t eliminating the Hawkweed – I’m sure I miss seeing a lot of the non-flowering plants – but it doesn’t seem to be spreading.
