Two main groups:  Periodical Cicadas (Magicicada sp.) which have dark bodies and bright red eyes;  and Annual Cicadas (several genera including Tibicen, Neocicada, Platypedia).  Immatures live underground eating plant roots.  Adults sing loudly to attract mates.  (Bugguide)
