Herpetogramma thestealis – Zigzag Herpetogramma

Caterpillar foods:  basswood, hazel, Carolina silverbell (Halesia carolina), spikenard (Aralia sp.).  (Wikipedia)

This is sometimes difficult to tell from several similar species.  H. thestealis has dark shading in the subterminal area, solid dark areas contrasting with white areas, and sometimes a purplish sheen.   (Hugh McGuinness)
