Nymphalis vau-album – Compton Tortoiseshell

Caterpillar foods:  larvae feed in groups on willow, birch and poplar  (Bugguide)

This species overwinters as an adult, so we see them flying early in spring and late in the fall.  The adults feed on tree sap and rotting fruit.  Their numbers vary – some years we see a lot, some years almost none.
