Feltia subgothica/tricosa – Subgothic/Confused Dart

Hodges #10674,  # 10675

Caterpillar foods:  low plants and crops (Beadle & Leckie)

These two species are difficult to tell apart.  The best way is to look at the setae of the male antennae under a microscopeF. tricosa has one seta on each segment that’s twice as long as the segment.  Also, F. tricosa are often darker than F. subgothica.  (Jerry Fauske).

For the moment, I’m putting all my photos of these species on this one page.  If I can check some of their antennae under the microscope next summer, I may be able to make a page for each species, or at least be more specific about which one I have here.  I suspect these first two are F. subgothica, since they’re quite light colored, but I’d like to be sure.

7/29/2012  This one is light, so it may be subgothica.

8/6/2012  I think this one may be tricosa – it’s quite a bit darker than ones I’ve seen before.
