Caterpillar foods: a wide variety of tree leaves (Bugguide)
This species is very similar to Melanolophia canadaria. After checking all my photos, I think all of mine are Melanolophia signataria. M. signataria is browner overall; has a smoother, plainer background, especially in the median area; and has bold patches of darker brown. M. canadaria is grayer; has a much more mottled background, and the dark patches don’t stand out as much from the background.
