Lithophane hemina

Hodges # 9893

Caterpillar foods: sour cherry, birch, box-elder, chokecherry and oak  (Lepidoptera of Wayne Co., OH)

This species is very similar to Lithophane lanei.  Kyle Johnson says:  “the wing angle can be misleading regarding the subreniform dark rectangle……you can see a jagged “tooth” project downward by over half the length of the rectangle in heminahemina also has a noticeably more “streaky” wing texture.”

Here’s a link to a page of L. hemina and L. lanei specimens I’ve found, with Kyle’s comments.

9/16/2012   Thanks to Hugh McGuinness for help with this ID.  He gave me help on the difference between this, and L. petulca – the differences are pretty subtle.  Hugh said:  “The primary difference is the color of the costa: silvery in petulca, yellowish or reddish in hemina. My guess is this is hemina.”
