Chloridea subflexa – Subflexus Straw Moth

Family Noctuidae   Hodges # 11070

Caterpillar foods:  Black Nightshade (Solanum) and Groundcherry (Physalis)  (Wagner et al)

Adults are very similar to Chloridea virescens – Tobacco Budworm. The clearest difference is in the hindwings.  C. virescens has a “strong blackish or reddish margin”, in subflexa, the margin is pale gray.  (Moths of North Carolina)   Less obvious are the lines on the forewings.  In subflexa the ST line ends in or close to the apex.  In virescens, it “ends noticeably below the apex.”  Also, virescens tends to be darker green than subflexa.  (Bugguide)  And, the lines are “basically parallel on virescens, but the PM line on subflexa gently curves towards the apex.” (Ken Childs – Bugguide)
