Lots of adventures since my last note.
We’ve gotten to know Jackie and Dan. They had us over for lunch once, and we stopped by for hot tea on a cold afternoon. And the have email, so we have people to talk to about all our farming issues. Nice! They have a nice spacious house, with loads of natural light, and lots of Dan’s woodworking projects around. They have a deck across the front with suet and birdseed, and lots of woodpeckers constantly visiting. Funny to see them pop their heads up over the edge of the suet and look in the window.
The loggers are finally finished. They made more of a mess than we had hoped – big roads across the field, and one along the top, between the oak woods and where the pines were.
And there’s lots of slash to burn. But it’s done, and nest week we’ll plant seeds on the worst damaged areas.
The woods above it – on the bluff – looks so different. We walked up to Big View Prairie and marveled – we can now see all the way through to the field, and the woods are so light. It will be interesting to see how the plants change.

Getting rid of the slash will be a huge project – we’ll talk to Ron and Armand about doing a burn up the whole slope – maybe next fall or next spring.
We’re making progress on plans for the house. Mike has a set of plans that we’ve given Perry for a bid. It may get built this summer.
