Journal for October 19, 2008

We just got back from a trip through eastern Canada. I still have a few photos from before we left, so this is a short, belated post about the farm in mid-September.

These are some late prairie asters

Silky Aster

Aromatic Aster

The holly berries are ripe now. This is Winterberry (Ilex verticillata)

And here are some wonderful woodland mushrooms.

We’ve seen several small snakes crossing the driveway recently. They’re very small – only about 12 inches long.

I think this one is a Red Bellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) – I didn’t see its belly, but its head with red on it, and light patches just behind the head, suggest that’s what it is.

And I think this one is a Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi).
