We discovered a new animal on our land this week – in a large den on Fallen Oak Point. We were especially curious because the hole was so big – at least a foot in diameter.

My moths are beginning to hatch – a little later than they have in other years. The Polphemus moths all hatched last week. I’m taking care of Margot’s moths too, so for 3 of the days I had 9 moths emerge each day!

It’s really summer now – the leaves are thick and deep green. The weather has changed suddenly to warm and humid with big thunder clouds. We got almost 2 ½ inches of rain from the thunderstorms a few days ago.
Violet Wood Sorrel
Violet Wood Sorrel (Oxalis violacea) is a beautiful late spring wildflower in western and south-western Wisconsin. It grows in prairies and dry woodlands.

I’ve looked back at other spring times, and realized that I always run into the same problem – there are too many beautiful days to walk and take pictures, and not enough rainy ones to write blog entries. So, in an effort to catch up, this entry is mostly photos.

We haven’t had any snow for two weeks – so I think spring has come! And it seems like all the spring flowers are blooming at once.
Mating Cabbage Whites
Cabbage Whites (Pieris rapae) are non-native butterflies that were introduced into the United States from Europe in the 1860s. Their caterpillars eat plants in the mustard family, including common garden vegetables like broccoli and cabbage.

There are more flowers in bloom this week, in spite of the weather. It’s been very cold – below freezing at night and very windy. And this morning we woke up to four inches of fresh snow!
Rue Anemones
Rue Anemones are some of the most beautiful early spring flowers we have on our land. They grow on wooded hillsides, and bloom from mid-April until late in May. Yesterday I found a whole hillside of blooming plants.

We had a snowstorm a few weeks ago, which I think might be the last for the season. I actually enjoy these spring storms – the snow is heavy and wet and it smells of spring.
