Alypia octomaculata – Eight-spotted Forester

Hodges # 9314

Caterpillar food: leaves of grape and Virginia Creeper

[Very similar in appearance to Alypia langtoniA. langtoni females have only 6 spots – two on each forewing and one on each hind wing.  (Males have 8.)  Both sexes have white rings on antennal segments – photo at neartica.com.]

The adults fly during the day.  They’re fairly common here – and easy to spot because of their bright coloring.

6-10-2009  This adult had just emerged, and was sitting on a grass stem pumping up its wings.

It was very calm, and willing to sit on my finger.

6-2-2008  Another adult with fully extended wings
