Alypia octomaculata – Eight-spotted Forester
Caterpillar food: leaves of grape and Virginia Creeper
[Very similar in appearance to Alypia langtoni. A. langtoni females have only 6 spots - two on each forewing and one on each hind wing. (Males have 8.) Both sexes have white rings on antennal segments - photo at neartica.com.]
The adults fly during the day. They're fairly common here - and easy to spot because of their bright coloring.
